En una reciente comparecencia, un periodista ha preguntado a la ministra de Sanidad sobre el rechazo de los médicos a la obligatoriedad de las guardias. Mónica García ha respondido, con un cinismo perturbador, que la atención a las urgencias de la población no puede ser voluntaria, por lo que las guardias deben ser obligatorias.

Sin embargo, Mónica García miente deliberadamente. Ella sabe que ningún médico sostendría jamás que atender las urgencias pueda ser voluntario. Lo que demandamos no es eso, sino la voluntariedad de cualquier prolongación de la jornada laboral. Los médicos somos los únicos profesionales a los que, una vez completada nuestra jornada, se nos obliga a hacer horas extra a precio de saldo con el argumento falaz de que es necesario para cubrir las urgencias.

Como la ministra sin ninguna duda conoce, los médicos también atendemos urgencias durante la jornada laboral ordinaria. Algunos servicios y unidades médicas, de hecho, dedican toda su jornada a esta modalidad de asistencia. Asignar la atención urgente a las guardias no es más que un invento para ahorrarse plantilla a costa de esclavizar a los médicos.

En la sanidad pública se ha implantado un modelo perverso que consiste en prolongar la jornada laboral del médico de manera obligatoria con excesos de jornada denominados guardias. Para encubrir esta fórmula siniestra se recurre a los eufemismos de “jornada ordinaria” y “jornada complementaria”. Sin embargo, la “jornada complementaria” no es más que un subterfugio para privar al colectivo médico del derecho a una jornada laboral máxima similar a la del resto de los empleados públicos.

Pero este modelo, que nos obliga a hacer horas extra mal pagadas, que nos priva de derechos laborales básicos y de capacidad negociadora, y que constituye una forma inaceptable de explotación laboral, ha entrado en crisis. La ministra hará bien en abandonar sus argumentos tramposos y tomarse en serio nuestras reivindicaciones, porque nuestras movilizaciones no se detendrán hasta que los médicos y facultativos tengamos en la práctica los mismos derechos que el resto de los empleados públicos.
